Portland Branch Participates in Historic Statewide NAACP Lobby Day in Salem

About 20 members of the NAACP Portland Branch made it to Salem to participate in a statewide lobby day. Branch members lobbied for two key legislative priorities. President Jo Ann Hardesty, along with the presidents of the Corvallis, Eugene, and Salem-Keiser branches, held a joint press conference in the morning to unveil the Oregon Environmental Justice report, a collaborative project among the presidents of the four branches. The branch presidents also met with Governor Kate Brown.

Members lobbied legislators on SB 496, which requires verbatim recording of all grand jury testimony, and HB 2355, which requires recording of demographic data during traffic stops and reduces some drug sentences from felonies to misdemeanors. Lobby day efforts were supported by the ACLU of Oregon.
